Godsmack

Awake
Godsmack album cover

Reviewed November 18, 2000
It doesn't say much for Godsmack's new album, Awake , when the most exciting song is an instrumental. Sure the disc is okay, but it attempts to impress sans the energy that was put into their debut album.

It's definetely recongnizable as Godsmack, due partly to Sully Erna's uniquely grim vocals, but it's not much like the first album otherwise. This is a record that will bring on rainy days. The brooding lyrics fit Sully's brooding vocals throughout all the homogenous songs. Awake  lacks any songs with the energetic positive intensity of the first three tracks from their previous album. The disc starts out slowly and gets only slightly better once you hit "Mistakes." "Vampires" is the lone song I really like. Unfortunately, it's only words are included as samples.

The production quality is good and there is only one horrible song, "Bad Magick", but with the aforementioned issues, Awake  gets just 2.5 of 5 stars.
