Bush

The Science of Things
Bush album cover

Reviewed December 26, 1999
Bush's third album, The Science of Things , is anything but the best that this popular grunge band can produce. If you're looking for a decent follow-up to Razorblade Suitcase , this is it. But if you're looking for something on par with the excellent Sixteen Stone , you're just out of luck.

Science  is nothing special. Some songs, such as "English Fire," are even unbearable to listen to. Sure, there are some decent songs. "The Chemicals Between Us" was good enough that I bought the disc. "Warm Machine" isn't bad, but it's not great. Nothing is really catchy other than "The Chemicals Between Us." And vocalist Gavin Rossdale doesn't put much feeling into his songs until "The Disease of the Dancing Cats." That's a very weird song, but I like it a little just because Gavin puts some feeling into it and because it sounds original - something I can't say for most of the tracks. He just sounds so bored and uncreative in everything else.

Another thing - Gavin seems to have tried to please too many people within one album. It ranges from a fair ballad, "Letting The Cables Sleep," to a mediocre grunge song, "Prizefighter."

If you really liked Razorblade Suitcase , then go ahead and buy Science . Otherwise, don't waste your cash. I can only give this album two of five stars.
