Snake Eyes

Snake Eyes

Reviewed November 8, 1999
Nicolas Cage has definitely played better roles, but Snake Eyes  was far from a disappointment. Cages plays the part of a crooked cop who happens to be in the right place at the wrong time to unearth a murder conspiracy. Gary Sinise stars beside him as his trusted friend and head guard for the Secretary of Defense. Set at a major boxing match, the Secretary of Defense is shot and the twisting plot ensues.

The movie kept me in suspense until about three fourths of the way through, when it turned into more of a poor action flick. Up until that point, I could hardly decide which character to side with, other than the obvious Cage. Each of the characters is well thought out, and all but Sinise do a good job acting their parts. In addition, the smooth camerawork is very impressive and adds plenty to the story.

The only thing that really disappointed me was the ending. It could have been much more of a surprise than it was, and I didn't understand why the police van just happened to be driving by during a hurricane. That was the other thing that bugged me - what was the point of the hurricane?

I could tell you more, but I hate to give away the mostly exciting story line. Minor quips aside, I give Snake Eyes  four of five stars.
