Powerman 5000

Tonight The Stars Revolt!
Powerman 5000 album cover

Reviewed September 27, 1999
Powerman 5000 's 1999 album, Tonight The Stars Revolt!  makes for quite interesting listening. It's not the most original music, though. Much of it sounds like White Zombie's Astro-Creep 2000 . This shouldn't come as any big surprise, since lead singer Spider is Rob Zombie's younger brother. The difference is that PM5K are better at what they do. The shock rock basis is the same, but Spider makes his lyrics understandable and PM5K's guitars are even more aggressive. PM5K also uses a space theme for their disc, rather than Zombie's horror show themes.

Of course, I have a favorite song - "Supernova Goes Pop." I don't care so much for the mainly dialogue and oddball tracks, 1, 5, and 13, but the rest of this rather short disc is good. If you like their first single, "When Worlds Collide," then you'll like the rest of the CD even better.

PM5K seem to be out just to have fun. And they bring that fun to my ears in a very powerful way. I give Tonight The Stars Revolt!  four of five stars.
