Dishwalla

Pet Your Friends
Dishwalla album cover

Reviewed August 2, 1999
One of the first CDs I bought, Dishwalla's Pet Your Friends  remains a favorite of mine. After hearing "Counting Blue Cars" on the radio, I ran out and got the disc, fully expecting that it would be the best song. Not so. The first five tracks are the best, but the entire disc is good.

Pet Your Friends  deals strongly with current social issues, such as premarital sex ("Pretty Babies") and suicide ("Haze"). Dishwalla even wonder in one song, "Explode," whether they'll make it as a mainstream band. Well, they obviously have made it, due partly to lead singer J.R. Richards' smooth voice, and partly because of some creative guitar riffs.

As mentioned, I love the whole disc, but my favorite song has to be "Charlie Brown's Parents" mainly because it is the hardest rocking and has good bass. You'll have to look to any of the other songs, though, if you want to hear meaningful lyrics. I give Dishwalla's Pet Your Friends  4.5 of 5 stars.
